India’s First Rare Disease Biobank in Gujarat | Major Healthcare Innovation

Gujarat is emerging as a key hub in India’s fight against rare genetic disorders, with a major breakthrough in Ahmedabad.The FRIGE’s Institute of Human Genetics has established the country’s first national biobank focused on Lysosomal Storage Disorders. Developed over 22 years, the biobank contains samples and clinical data from over 530 patients.Backed by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, researchers are working on identifying genetic mutations, improving diagnostics, and developing affordable testing kits.The institute has already achieved success in diagnosing 19 rare disorders using advanced genetic sequencing and is exploring gene therapy solutions to make treatment more accessible.This initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening India’s healthcare innovation and making rare disease treatment more affordable.
